Travelguide Aruba (North America)

Aruba, the smallest and the most westerly of the ABC islands, is in the southern Caribbean and is also one of the last links of the Lesser Antilles. It is only 25 km from mainland Venezuela and belongs to the three parts of the kingdom of the Netherlands that enjoy equal rights. Aruba enjoys complete autonomy and has its own constitution and government.

Geography:
the 300 km² large island is to a large extent flat. The kilometre long snow white sandy beaches that fringe the whole of the west coast like a string of pearls, are especially characteristic. The east coast on the other hand, is dominated by an isolated windy landscape and makes a fascinating contrast with its strangely shaped cliffs that have been formed by the force of the sea. The highest point on Aruba is the Jamanota with 188 metres, offering good views of the island and the Caribbean.

Climate and the best time to travel:
Aruba is located outside the dangerous hurricane region and enjoys wonderful weather throughout the year that is cooled down by the pleasant southwesterly Passat winds. The average daytime temperatures are a pleasant 28°C and there is no rainy season on the ABC islands. The rain showers tend to be relatively short and heavy and are confined to the months between October and December.

Language and communication
: the official and national language is Dutch. Most inhabitants can understand English, Spanish, Portuguese and German.

Health and vaccinations:
vaccination against hepatitis A, typhoid, diphtheria, polio and tetanus is recommended. Long clothing should be worn to afford protection against mosquitoes and other insects, and a locally purchased insect repellent should also be used. Medical care in Aruba tends to be good. Visitors should take out a comprehensive medical and travel insurance with cover for repatriation costs. A first aid kit should be packed and fruit and vegetables peeled or boiled before eating.

Entry requirements:
passports should be valid for six months after the date of entry. At present a visa is not needed. EU citizens may stay for 90 days without formalities. Children should have their own passport.

Arrival and onward journey:
the flight time from Europe is about 9 hours, with a variety of airlines serving the island, most flights involving a stop-over. American Airlines, Virgin Atlantic, Continental Airlines and KLM all provide services from UK airports. The other two ABC islands: Curacao and Bonaire may be easily reached using the airline Dutch Antilles Express from the International Airport Queen Beatrix (AUA) , the flight time is 30 minutes. The airport is 4 km south of the capital city Oranjestad.

Capital city:
Oranjestad has about 30,000 inhabitants and is strategically located in a cove that is served daily by a number of cruise liners. Along with the export of oil, tourists are the second most important source of income for the island. Oranjestad is famous in particular for its architecture that was mostly influenced by the Netherlands and has scattered its Dutch Caribbean charm around the island. The most important and beautiful of attractions in Oranjestad are the Fort Zoutman, Willem III tower and the Schooner harbour, where many cruise ships dock every day and where there are also many shops offering tax free goods.

Places of interest and beaches:
the best places in Aruba are in the interior and on the beaches. The unique and unforgettable natural and lush vegetation of Aruba is the jewel of the island. The central Arikok National Wildlife Park takes up more than 20 % of the total area of the islands. The park gives a good insight into the flora and fauna on the island and is populated by countless species of cactus, Aloe Vera’s and Divi-Divi trees, which are often home to iguanas and rare species of bird. The natural bridge, however, is without doubt the most beautiful of attractions on the island. The 10-metre high and 30 metre wide bridge consists of cooled down lava stone that was formed and eroded by the day-to-day surf of the ocean. It is a masterwork of nature. The Bubali bird nature reserve is also in the interior of the island and may be reached from the capital via a northern exit. There are daily, guided excursions for bird watchers and nature lovers.

The beaches of Aruba are still considered to be a secret as they have so far remained untouched by hurricanes and offer a picture book panorama where all sorts of sporting activities may be practiced. The beaches Dos Playa and Andicouri on the north coast are also worthwhile, as they are particularly suited for wave riding. Divers and snorkellers should head for the coral reefs on Hadikuri Beach on the north west coast. On a clear day, the water offers a view 30 metres deep. The baby beach is ideal for those looking for peace and quiet and who prefer having a place to themselves and calm seas.

Religion: more than 80% of the population is Roman Catholic, there are also many Hindus, Muslims, Confucians, and Jews.
