Travelguide Croatia (Europe)

Croatia is a parliamentary-democratic republic and borders on Slovenia, Hungary, Serbia, Montenegro and Bosnia Herzegovina and the Adriatic Sea. This southern European country has a total of 1,185 islands, only 67 of which are inhabited.

Croatia may be divided into three landscape zones, the Pannonian lowlands, the dinarian mountain region and the Adriatic coastal region. The Pannonian plains consist to a large extent of flatlands which are interrupted by a mid mountain region. The climate here is temperate and continental. Middle and high mountain ranges and the Adriatic coastal region determine the area of the dinarian mountains. The climate here is mountainous. The karst landscape of the Adriatic coast is dominated by Mediterranean cultural influences with a Mediterranean climate.

The highest mountains are the Dinara (1,830 m), the Kamešnica (1,810 m; 5,938 ft), the Sveti Jure (1,762 m; 5,780 ft), the Vaganski Vrh (1,757 m; 5,764 ft) and the Plešivica (1.657 m; 5,436 ft).

The largest lakes are the Vransko Jezero, the Dubravsko Jezero, the Peručko Jezero and the Prokljansko Jezero. The Sava, Drava, Kupa and the Danube are the best-known and longest rivers in Croatia.

At a European comparison, Croatia is a small country but encompasses eight national parks and ten natural parks. A total of 5,846 km² of the mainland is under environmental protection. Interesting destinations include the Plitwitzer lakes – world famous national park with wonderful waterfalls, the national parks Koronaten and Krka, but the islands of Cres, Brac, Hvar and Korcula are also worth a visit. The historic complex of the city Split with the palace of the Diokletians, the old town of Dubrovnik, the Nationalpark Plitvicer lakes, the bishops complex of the Euphrasius-Basilica in the historic centre of Poreč, the historic city of Trogir and the cathedral of the holy Jacob in Šibenik were added to the UNESCO’s list of natural and world heritage sites.

Zagreb is the capital of Croatia and the seat of government, transport knot and the economic as well as cultural centre of the country. The city centre of Zagreb is an administration for itself and the surrounding region is a further administrative area. The city is in the south-west of the Pannonian plains at the foot of the Medvecednica Mountains. The cathedral is the landmark of Zagreb and at the same time the seat of the catholic archdeacon of Zagreb. Other places of interest in Zagreb are the Kaptol, Ban Josip Jelačić Square, the Banski dvori, the parliamentary building Sabor as well as the Cibona-Tower (92 m) one of the highest buildings in the city and the television tower.

Other interesting cities in Croatia are Dubrovnik, Karlovac, Pula, Rijeka, Split and Zagreb.

The most important airports are in Split, Dubrovnik, Zagreb, Rijeka and Zadar. There are also several important Adriatic harbours in Croatia, for example Rijeka, Ploče and Split.
