Travelguide Finland (Europe)

Finland borders on Russia, Norway and Sweden as well as on the Gulf of Bothnia and Finland. Lakes take up about 10 % of the country and declaring the number as being 188,000 is an understatement.

Finland is divided up into several landscapes: the southern coastal area between Hamina and Turku, the Bothnian coastal area between Turku and Vaasa, the Finnish Lake District, the central Finnish hills east of Oulu and the Finnish part of Lapland. The most significant rivers in Finland include the Kemijoki, Tornionjoki, Ounasjoki, Muonionjoki, Iijoki and the Tenojoki.

The highest mountain in Finland is the Haltitunturi (1,328 m; 4,356 ft) in the Caledonian Scanden Mountains.

The climate in Finland is cool but constant, the vicinity of the Gulf Stream ensures that the weather it relatively mild for this latitude and there is a slight west to east difference. On the islands of Åland, the summers are cooler and the winters milder. Åland is the sunniest region in Finland with 1900 hours of sunshine. At the end of June/ beginning of July, the midnight sun may be seen in Finland north of the polar circle. Even in the south of the country it is never really dark at this time of the year. The polar night (kaamos) is the opposite of the midnight sun and in this night, the 21st December, the sun is not seen at all at the polar circle (Rovaniemi) and even in the south of the country, the sun is only visible for very few hours.

Helsinki has been the capital of Finland since 1812. The Cathedral, designed by Carl Ludwig Engel and that was finished in 1852, is the landmark of Helsinki. The centre of the Helsinki region is on a peninsula at the end of an important main road, the Mannerheimintie (Mansku). The shopping streets Aleksanterinkatu (Aleksi) and Esplanadi (Espa) link the Senate Square, which dominates the historic centre.

Important harbours are to be found in Hamina, Helsinki, Kokkola, Kotka, Loviisa, Oulu, Pori, Rauma, Turku, Uusikaupunki and Varkaus.

The most important airport in the country is Helsinki-Vantaa, it is located 15 km north of the city. The second largest airport is in Oulu.

Saariselkä and Levi are the best-known areas for winter sports in North Lapland. A popular winter sport is ice hockey, but ice-skating and ice fishing (pilkkiminen) are also possible in the numerous and frozen lakes.

Finland has a large number of national parks, which are also open to visitors. There is usually a good infrastructure in the parks with marked paths and information boards, campsites and refuges.

On the south and west coast there are many sandy beaches, the most beautiful of which is the mile long Yyteri by Pori, but the beaches at Kalajoki are also very popular.
