Travelguide Ghana (Africa)

The Republic of Ghana is on the west African coast and borders on the Ivory Coast, Burkina Faso, Togo and the Gulf of Guinea in the south.

Geography:
Ghana is a relatively flat country and only rarely reaches altitudes higher than 850 metres. More than half of the entire area lies is at less than 150 metres above sea level. The country may be divided up into three different zones: the coastal plain, the rainforest and the savannah.

Mountains and rivers
: the highest point in the country is Mount Afadjato with 885 metres (2903 ft) close to the border with Togo.  The Tagbo waterfalls are the hills tourist attraction. The entire area is of volcanic origin and completely covered in rainforest. The longest river is the Volta and consists of the White and the Black Volta with a length of about 1,600 km (994 miles). The Volta Lake is the largest freshwater lake of the country and is also the largest manmade reservoir in the world. It is near the city of Akosombo and is navigable throughout the year. Far more interesting is Bosumtwi Lake, in a meteorite crater and with a diameter of 8 km and depth of 80 metres. It is estimated to be more than a million years old.

Climate and the best time to travel:
the climate in Ghana is tropical, there are no seasons and only a dry and a wet season.

Language and communication:
the official and national language is English; many local languages are also spoken in Ghana such as Twi, Ewe, Hausa and Dagbani.

Health and vaccinations:
vaccination against hepatitis A, typhoid, diphtheria, polio and tetanus is recommended. Long clothing should be worn to provide protection against mosquitoes and other insects, and a locally purchased insect repellent should also be used. There is a danger of contracting malaria in the entire country. Please refer to your GP for effective anti-malaria medication. Medical care is very good in all larger cities and tourist resorts. Visitors are advised to take out a comprehensive medical and travel insurance that covers repatriation costs. A first aid kit should be packed and fruit and vegetables peeled or boiled before being eaten.

Entry requirements:
British passport holders need a visa to enter Ghana, which can be applied for from the Ghanaian representation in the UK.  Passports should be valid for at least six months when applying for a visa and overstaying visas may lead to detention or heavy fines. Visitors may need to show a yellow fever vaccination certificate on arrival. As some countries require documentary evidence on parental responsibility, those intending to travel with children should seek advice on immigration procedures from the Ghanaian representation in the UK.

Arrival and onward journey:
all international flights arrive in Accra (ACC). British Airways (BA) provides flights from London Heathrow (LHR). The national airline Ghana International (GH) flies from London Gatwick (LGW). Ghana Airways is also a good choice for domestic flights for instance going to Kumasi (KMS) or Tamale (TML).

Capital city:
Accra is the capital city of Ghana with a population of 2 million. It is at the same time the economic and administrative centre of the whole country and together with the surrounding area and the city of Tema forms the Greater Accra Region, an urban megalopolis that extends for 100 km along the coast and stretches 30 km inland.

Places of interest and beaches
: the Digya national park is particularly worth seeing in Ghana. It is well known for its population of elephants and leopards and for the wealth in fish in Lake Volta.
