Travelguide Kyrgyzstan (Asia)

Kyrgyzstan is a landlocked country in central Asia and shares borders (3880 km in length) with 4 other countries. The country borders on Uzbekistan in the west, Kazakhstan in the north, China in the east and Tajikistan in the south.

Geography: t
he Tian Shan mountain range dominates the country. This mountain range belongs to the mountain belt that extends from the Aegean to the Pacific and takes up more than 65% of the countries area. The name Tian Shan comes from the Chinese and means the „celestial mountains“. The Tian Shan extends for over 2,500 km and therefore is double the length of the European Alps. The Tian Shan massif in the north east of Kyrgyzstan falls to form the Kasakh steppes; in the south-west, on the other hand, the mountains rise to form the even larger Pamir Mountains.

Mountains and rivers:
the highest mountain in the country is the Jengish Chokusu with a height of 7,439 m (24,406 ft) in the high mountains of Tian Shan. The longest river is the Syr Darja with a length of about 2,200 km (1,367 miles) and the Yssykköl with an area of 6,200 km² is the second largest mountain lake in the world. The lake is very rich in fish and provides a place to relax for the local population.

Climate and best time to visit
: the climate in Kyrgyzstan is hot and continental with very hot summers and ice-cold long winters. The daily temperature fluctuations are considerable and in the higher altitudes of the Tien Shan Mountains the climate is even sub-polar.

Language and communication:
the official and national language is Kyrgyz and due to the high percentage of Russians in Kyrgyzstan, also Russian.  The local travel agents, hotel workers and tradesmen also understand English.

Health and vaccinations
: vaccination against hepatitis A, typhoid, diphtheria, polio and tetanus is recommended. Long clothing should be worn to provide protection against mosquitoes and other insects, and a locally purchased insect repellent should also be used. There is only a slight danger of contracting a dangerous form of malaria in Kyrgyzstan and this is only the case in the southwestern areas of the country between the months of June and October. Medical care is very good in all larger cities and the tourist resorts. Visitors are advised to take out comprehensive medical and travel insurance that covers repatriation costs. A first aid kit should be packed and fruit and vegetables peeled or boiled before being eaten.

Entry requirements:
Visitors should obtain a visa before travelling, it is however possible to obtain one-month entry visas at the airport on arrival. Passports must be valid for at least six months from the date of arrival. Children must have a valid passport with a photograph. Those intending to travel with children should contact the Kyrgyz embassy in London.

Arrival and onward journey:
Aeroflot (SU) fly from London to Bishkek (FRAU) with a stop over; Turkish Airlines (TK) also serve Kyrgyzstan.

Capital city:
the capital Bishkek (Kyrgyz: Bişkek /Бишкек) is also the political, economic and cultural heart of the country. The city, which lies at an altitude of 800 m on the edge of the Kyrgyz Mountains, has its origins on an old caravan route on the Silk Road. It is a lively modern city in central Asia that in Soviet times was designed in a classical chessboard form with broad boulevards and large blocks of flats in the typical Russian building style. Due to its relatively short history, the city has no notable historical monuments.

Places of interest:
walking in almost untouched nature, trekking in the foothills of the Tien Shan and climbing more than 90 massive mountain chains is without doubt the highlight in Kyrgyzstan and the most important economic factor of tourism for the country.

Religion:
more than 80% of the population profess to Sunni Islam, 18% are orthodox Christians, the remaining percent are minorities of other religious communities.

Major Cities and accommodation
: Bishkek, Osh, Jalal-Abad, Tomkok and Kara-Kul.
