Travelguide Norway (Europe)

The Kingdom of Norway is one of the Scandinavian countries and is located on a large peninsula. It borders on Sweden, Finland and Russia. Norways economic zone in the North sea borders on that of Denmark and of Scotland. The overseas regions of Svalbard in the northern Atlantic and the North Pole sea, Jan Mayen in the the northern Atlantic, the islands of Bouvet and Peter-I. in the South Pole sea, and Queen Maud Land in the Antarctic also belong to Norway. Norway is also surrounded by about 150,000 islands, the most famous island group is the Lofoten.

Norway is particularly famous for its varied nature. Its many  Fjords on the western coast extend way into the country and are surrounded by high mountains. In many uninhabited areas of Norway, national parks have been set up and extensively protected by law. Geographically, Norway is characterised by mountain ranges and sparse high plateaus, the  Fjells, 26 summits have an altitude that is higher than 2,300 m (7, 545 ft). Galdhøpiggen (2,469 m; 8,100 ft) in the Jotunheimen mountains is the highest mountain on the mainland. The Hardangervidda in Norway is the largest high mountain plateau in Europe.

The mountain range Skanden separates the narrow coastal strip in the west from the continentally influenced climate in the east. Due to the gulf stream the west coast has a very mild climate, meaning that the coast remains free of ice throughout the winter.

The most popular winter sports in Norway include downhill skiing and cross-country skiing along with snowboarding. In the summer months, hill walking and cycling are popular. Adventure is provided by kayaking, rafting, paragliding or exploring the caves.

Oslo (norwegian: uslu) is the capital city of Norway. The city is more than 1,000 years old and was founded by the Vikings. The most important airport in Norway is Oslo Gadermoen (OSL). About 110 km south of Oslo is another airport: Torp (TRF). The most significant attractions are the Ship museums on Bygdøy, the town hall in which the awards for the Nobel prize for peace are held every year, the Munch Museum, the ski jumping hall Holmenkollen, Akershus palace and the castle (Akershus slott og festning), the Royal Palace (Slottet), the National Gallery and the television tower Tryvannstårnet. There are ferry services from Oslo to Kiel, Hirtshals, Frederikshavn, Copenhagen and Helsingborg.

Other interesting cities in Norway are Bergen, Stavanger, Trondheim – a significant technology centre, Fredrikstad, Kristiansand, Larvik – the harbour town on the south coast, Ålesund – the city of Art Nouveau and Lillehammer – a picturesque winter sports city and former site of the winter Olympics.

Jotunheimen (with the highest mountains in the country), the islands of Lofoten, the north cape island Magerøya, Sognefjord (the longest fjord in Europe) and Hessdalen a 12 km long valley with strange lights on the horizon are all worth a visit.

Other international airports in Norway are in Bergen, Stavanger, Tromsö and Trondheim.

The most important harbours of the country next to Oslo are Borg Havn, Bergen, Mo i Rana, Molde, Mongstad, Narvik and Sture.
