Romania is located on the Black Sea and borders on Bulgaria, Serbia, Hungary, the Ukraine and Moldova.
Geographically, Romania is a very interesting country, in the centre are the Transylvanian highlands almost entirely surrounded by the Carpathian Mountains. In the south-west of Rumania is the Banat mountain range and west of this is the Banat plain, which joins up with the Pannonian plain. The south on the other hand is determined by the flat Walachia, through which flows the Danube. In the east of Rumania, the foothills of the east Carpathians fall to the highlands of the Moldova and are almost entirely surrounded by the Carpathian Mountains. The highest mountain is the Moldoveanu (2,544 m; 8,346 ft)
Rumania is divided up into the administrative units of Walachia, Banat, the Transylvanians (Apuseni and Valea Hartibaciului), the Danube delta, the Carpathians and Moldavia.
The country is largely determined by a temperate continental climate, with cold winters and warm, often hot summers. The climate in the region of the Black Sea tends to be more Mediterranean in the summer.
Navigable rivers in Romania are the Tisza, Mureş, Siret, Prut and the Danube. Journeys by boat on the Danube and above all in the Danube Delta are also very popular with tourists.
Bucharest (Romanian: Bucureşti), is the capital city of Romania, and is the political, economic and cultural centre of the country. There is a university and other higher educational establishments here, theatres, museums, and cultural establishments. Tourist attractions in Bucharest include the Patriarchs Palace and the surrounding buildings, the parliamentary building, Parcul Cismigiu, the National theatre, the Arcul de Triumf, the Bucharest Kings palace (Palatul Regal) and the museum of the Romanian village.
Other interesting cities in Romania are Cluj-Napoca, Constanţa, Braşov, Oradea, Bacău, Sibiu, Drobeta-Turnu Severin, Hunedoara and Sighişoara.
Romania’s international airports are near Bucharest (Henri Coanda and Baneasa), Sibiu, Constanţa (Mihail Kogalniceanu), Cluj-Napoca, Timişoara, Suceava and Tirgu Mures.
