Republic in southern Africa.

The Republic of South Africa borders on Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Swasiland; the enclave of Lesotho is in the interior of the country. The country has an area of 1,219,912 km².

The central plateau has an altitude of between 900 and 2,000 m. The Drakensberg Mountains extend through the country from the north-east to the enclave of Lesotho in the south-east, where they reach their highest point at the Thabana Ntlenyana, which is at 3,482 m (11,423  ft) above sea level. The highest elevation in South Africa is the Njesuthi with 3,446 m (11,305 ft).

North-west of Bloemfontein is the Kalahari desert which extends through Botswana to Namibia. At Cape Agulhas, the most southerly point of the continent, the atlantic and the Indian Ocean meet. West of this is the Cape of Good Hope.

Most of the rivers in South Africa originate in the Drakensberg  Mountains and flow to the east in the direction of the Indian Ocean. The longest river, the Orange River, with a length of 1,860 km (1,155 miles) also has its source in the Drakensberg, but flows to the west and into the Atlantic ocean.  The Augrabies waterfalls (Aukoerebis, "the place of the great noise") of the Orange in the north-west of the Gordonia district were discovered in 1778 by Hendrik Wikar and have a width of about 3 km, measuring 190 m in height, 146 m of this in free fall. The main waterfall is about 150 m wide. Other important rivers are the Limpopo, which flows into the Indian Ocean after 1,600 km, and the Vaal (1,251 km),  tributary of the Orange River. The water levels of these rivers vary considerably. The Prince Edward Islands in the southern Indian ocean also belong to South Africa.

The two biggest and most important airports in the country are in Johannesburg and Cape Town. The state airline South African Airways (SAA) has international flights to and from both of these airports. Other large international airlines such as Lufthansa, British Airways, Iberia, Air France or KLM operate daily flights to Johannesburg or Cape Town. There are many offers of domestic flights and flights to neighbouring countries by airlines such as SAA, Comair, Nationwide, Kulula.com, 1Time or Air Namibia. Smaller airports, for example George, Durban, Port Elizabeth, East London, Pretoria, Lanzeria or Bloemfontein are also served.

South Africa gave up its territorial claims in the Antarctic and in Whale Bay in Namibia in 1994. Tourism has developed into a very important economic factor for South Africa.

Places of interest include Suncity, the Kruger National Park, the 3000 km long coastal strip, Cape Town and Johannesburg, also known for its gold mines.
