Monarchy in south-western Europe on the Iberian Peninsula, east of Portugal.

Spain, officially the Kingdom of Spain, shares the Iberian Peninsular with Portugal. It borders with France and the small state of Andorra at the mountain range, the Pyrenees.

The Balearics and the Canary islands also form part of Spain, as do the cities of Ceuta and Melilla, which are located on the north African coast. In France, the exclave of Llívia, and off the Moroccan coast, the islas Chafarinas, Peñón de Vélez de la Gomera, Alhucemas, Alborán and the Islas Columbretes also belong to Spain.

The largest lake in Spain is the Lago de Sanabria, measuring a total of 368 Hectares, with a depth of up to 55 m.

The most important airports in Spain are to be found in Alicante, Barcelona, Madrid, Valencia, Málaga, Jerez, Bilbao, Santander as well as on the islands.

Due to the peninsular’s singular shape, various climatic regions are prevalent throughout the country. Whereas the north Atlantic coast has an Atlantic climate, with very mild winters and summers, in the centre of the Iberian peninsular, an oceanic-continental climate prevails, with very hot summers and very cold winters. Aragon, Catalonia, Valencia, Murcia, Castillia-La Mancha, Andalusia and the Balearics, have a continental Mediterranean climate, which brings partly hot summers and cold winters. The Canary Islands boast a sub-tropical climate and, in the higher areas of the Pyrenees, the Castilian mountains and the Cordillera Cantabrica, the winters are hard and long, with short cool summers (mountain climate).

Madrid, the capital of Spain, is one of the biggest metropolises in Europe. Madrid is also the geographical, political, and cultural centre of Spain. It is the seat of the Spanish government, of the catholic Archbishop and of important administrative and military offices, as well as being the residence of the King. The international airport, Barajas, is in the north-east of the city. There are a total of six universities as well as other institutes of higher education, numerous theatres, museums, and cultural establishments in Madrid. The city of Madrid belongs to the historic territory of Castillia. Sights in Madrid include the Palacio Real, La Almudena cathedral, the Plaza Mayor and the Plaza de la Puerta del Sol, the Vicente-Calderón stadium, the Santiago-Bernabéu stadium, the tower of Moncloa, the Metrópolis house of the Congreso de los Diputados and the Hotel Ritz. There are many interesting museums in the city such as El Prado, one of the most important museums of art in the world, the wax museum Museo de Cera, the Museo Arqueológico Nacional and the Museo Reina Sofía.

Other significant tourist destinations in Spain include Aranjuez, Barcelona, Bilbao, Granada, Marbella, Pamplona, Salamanca, Santiago de Compostela, Sevilla, Toledo, Valenzia and Zaragoza
