The Republic of Uruguay is a country in South America and borders in the north on Brazil, in the south on Argentina and in the east on the Atlantic Ocean. Uruguay is the second smallest country on the South American continent.
Geography: Uruguay is a relatively flat country that is dominated by the South American pampa, which serves as grazing country for cows and sheep. Only on the central mesa is the flatland interrupted by chains of hills, which only reach a maximum altitude of 500 metres.
Mountains and rivers: the highest point in Uruguay is the Cerro Catedral with a height of 514 metres (1,686ft). The longest river in the country is the Rio Uruguay with a length of 1,790 km (1,106 miles), which flows to form the Rio de la Plata, together with the Río Paraná from Argentina,.
Climate and best time to travel: the climate in the pampa lowlands is subtropical in the north and temperate in the south and is similar to the climate in Southern Europe, however with inverted seasons, meaning that the warmest months are between January and March and the coldest between June and August, when temperatures fall to a few degrees above freezing point.
Language and communication: the official and national language is Spanish; English is understood in the larger cities as well as the holiday resorts.
Health and vaccinations: vaccination against hepatitis A, typhoid, diphtheria, polio and tetanus is recommended. Long clothing should be worn to provide protection against infections spread by mosquitoes and other insects, and a locally purchased insect repellent should also be used. Medical care is very good in all larger cities and the tourist resorts. Visitors are advised to take out a comprehensive medical and travel insurance that covers repatriation costs. A first aid kit should be packed and fruit and vegetables peeled or boiled to avoid infections.
Entry requirements: British citizens do not require visas and may usually stay for up too three months. This period may be extended by a further 3 months. Passports must be valid for at least 6 months from the date of arrival. Those travelling alone with children may be required to show documentary evidence on entering Uruguay. Please seek advice from the Uruguayan Representation in the UK if intending to travel with children.
Arrival and onward journey: Uruguay is served by airlines from all over the world. From Europe, the best connections are offered by Iberia (IB) from Madrid (MAD) to Montevideo (MVD). In Uruguay itself, the national airline Pluna (PU) has the best connections: for example to Punta del Este (PDP), Salto (STY) or Artigas (ATI).
Capital city: the biggest city in Uruguay is the capital city Montevideo, with a population of about 1.5 million. It is also the only city in the country and is home to half of Uruguay’s entire population. In order to gain an overall impression of the city, a visit to the “Cerro" hill is a must. The Solis Theatre, National Museum for History and the Fine Arts and the wonderful and popular beaches Playas, Ramirez, Malvin and Pocitos are also worth a visit.
Places of interest and beaches: a beautiful place that is also often visited by locals in the summer is the Punta del Este. The seaside town is located about 140 km east of Monteviedo on the Atlantic coast and has about 40 km of long fine sand beaches. The attraction and the landmark of the place are "Los Dedos" (the fingers), which is a 5-metre wide and 3-metre high stone sculpture in the form of a hand that rises up from the sand on one of the beaches.
Religion: about 75% of the population is of Catholic belief. 20% are without confession and there are small minorities of Protestants and Jews.
